PROJECT 03 / YOUTH CARPENTRY AND MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
My name is Courtney Parr, and I began this project after many years in the carpentry industry where I found a lack of hands-on learning experiences for young people interested in the trade. The Edmonton Youth Carpentry and mentorship Project began as a way of filling that gap.
The vision of this program is to provide youth with access to the world of carpentry while building the industry’s future workforce. It targets at-risk or underserved youth whose lives may lack direction. Through carpentry and mentorship, vulnerable young ones will be kept off the streets and out of troubled homes or toxic environments and rather find themselves in a space where they can feel a sense of purpose and find open doors to pursue a future with positive outcomes. The program provides an opportunity for mentorship and learning that is centered on the success of the individual, as youth will work with certified expert carpenters in a state-of-the-art millwork shop. When they are ready, they will confidently walk into the field of commercial and residential builds, gaining hands-on experience for a future career.
Our company follows all safety requirements and guidelines set out by the City and will equip interns with the certifications and Personal Protective Equipment they need to be safe, plus additional knowledge that we have collected over the years through experience.

The Edmonton Youth Carpentry and Mentorship Program is designed to offer comprehensive carpentry training and mentorship to individuals aged 16 to 25. Our primary goal is to empower young adults with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the carpentry field.
This program accommodates 2 students per workday, totaling 7 students throughout the 7-month program. High school and junior high students can earn school credits, while participants in the NAIT college apprenticeship program can accrue work hours for their apprenticeship program.

To complete the program and earn certification, participants are required to commit 2 days a week, 3 hours per day on weekdays, totaling 225 hours over the 7-month term. Completing the program takes 14 months, accumulating a total of 450 hours.

Personal Development
Through the use of educational resources and dedicated mentors, we aim to empower students by providing comprehensive guidance on personal development. Learning for Vision's holistic approach encompasses personal development and mentorship for youth, helping them explore their identity, health, and purpose within the broader concept of the "Kingdom" while nurturing their economic understanding, ultimately shaping them to positively impact the world and manage finances in alignment with their values.
